Great Trails Grant awarded to PTRC for Piedmont Greenway

The Piedmont Triad Regional Council (PTRC) has been awarded a $500,000 grant from the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources through the Great Trails State Program. This funding will support design and engineering work for the Triad Park/Reedy Fork Segment of the Piedmont Greenway.

The grant application was a joint effort between Forsyth County, Guilford County and the Town of Kernersville, working in collaboration with PTRC. The award reflects a strong regional commitment to advancing the vision of the Piedmont Greenway, a planned 19-mile shared-use path that would extend from Salem Lake in Winston-Salem to Summerfield in Guilford County with existing connections to downtown Winston-Salem, Kernersville, Greensboro and High Point.

The awarded funds will specifically be used for the design and engineering of the Triad Park/Reedy Fork section, a critical connector segment that will link existing trails and green spaces across county lines, enhancing outdoor recreation, alternative transportation and economic development opportunities.

Governor Josh Stein recently announced nearly $11 million in trail development grants across the Piedmont region through the program, underscoring the importance of investing in accessible and connected greenways across the state.

“Forsyth County, Guilford County, and the Town of Kernersville are proud to be partnering together on this opportunity to connect our communities and build a stronger future for our region,” said Guilford County Parks Director Dwight Godwin. “This project highlights the strong partnership between the two counties and the town, working together to enhance the recreational and environmental value of the region.”

“Triad Park, jointly owned by Forsyth and Guilford County, serves as a testament to the power of regional collaboration and the foresight of our past and present elected officials.” said Forsyth County Parks & Recreation Director Chris Weavil. “The approximate 2.5-mile segment within Triad Park will be a catalyst for development of future segments of the Piedmont Greenway.”
